Great event! I just got back from a long sleep. And I still need a long break. Plus, I want to catch up with things I missed since I couldn't watch 3 streams at the same time. And those last day money matches. Not sure I have time to watch/write it all so short opinions/updates in my head/hands go first. (the summary posts will be updated over time.)
The Stream
- Why didn't they announce the stream URLs on the news? They revealed just when it started, and even announced the URL on the stream!
- Choosing Ustream is one of the best decisions. I don't have a problem at all.
- Having the low quality stream is also one of the best decisions (I mentioned about it before.) There're 4,200 viewers peak on the LQ stream.
- The main stream's presentation was great. Scores were updated as it happened. Camera switching was great.
Kindevu
- I'm glad he came! (He wasn't sure at first.) He's one of the true top players.
- Seth Killian said something bad about him, but I don't think it's true at all.
- He said he'll return next year!
Umehara
- The result didn't surprise me at all. He had to fight Poongko first, and there're 3 C. Viper players.
- Good thing, some people now finally realized that he's not invincible.
Other players
- I don't expect Momochi to win Evo, but I didn't expect Tokido and Mago to beat him either.
- Mago was random as usual. He won or lost when he shouldn't.
Commentators
- AKA & James Xie (BlazBlue finals), Chen, UltraDavid, Keits, Aris were impressive. I think AKA & Xie made some people buy BlazBlue after watching.
Japan Booth
Thanks to Gama no Abura (with the help of Nekohashi who acts as a translator), this's the first time Evo has a Japanese media coming directly from its fighting game community. There's a lot of interviews and casual talks, and all streamed to Japan. The station was also used as a place to hang out, too. Even Harada (Tekken producer) and Ono (SF4 producer) were there. Evo 2012
- Shiro said that he'll come again! (That means Fuudo, Shungoku Neurosis will probably come, too)
- Gama-san is in love with Evo now and it looks like he'll return again.
- I hope Frieda return next year. The big changes in UMvC3 will help. He's the only well-known JP player who chooses MvC3 over SF4. All he can do is studying from YouTube clips, beside playing with Tokido and Nemo. Respect.
Fuudo
This is actually the second international SF4 tournament he won. He won World Game Cup in France last year with Ryu, over Umehara. He also plays with Umehara in the game center often. He trained with Shungoku N. Viper before the finals. Winning Evo is understandable. Now he's on everyone's radar, it'll be tougher for him from now on.

Fuudo beat Wolfkrone 2-0, 4 rounds straight. He beat Latif twice, winning 5 games out of 6.

IPW & Team Spooky to stream Evo 2011
The new Evolution 2011 preview video showing in CEO 2011 revealed that IPLAYWINNER & Team Spooky is chosen to stream the event.
This's a big surprise, even many people asked for it. Because Level Up Series did a good job in their West Coast events. They did fine in last year's Evo, too, if you don't count the stream outage incident which was unfortunate. No one wants their stream to go down on purpose, and everyone will have this problem someday.
The most important element last year was there're 2 channels to choose: Stickam and Ustream. People who have difficulty viewing Stickam can choose Ustream instead, and vice versa.
What I'm worring about is now both sides abandoned Usteam and stream all their events on Justin.tv which is inferior. If IPW & Spooky decide to stream only on Justin.tv then it'll be an instant failure. (Not to mention that there should be a stream for slow broadband users so they don't need a re-stream.)
Team Spooky is known to have a member who has some personal issue with Daigo Umehara, but this shouldn't be a problem now since it's a world-class event. I'm sure they won't let that kind of people on the mic. My choice is Seth Killian, UltraDavid, James Chen, Juice Box. Maybe we'll talk about commentators later.

Spooky and Season's Beatings V incident
From the previous post, Spooky seemd to forget that his team actually ran the worst stream of 2010, and tried to downplay Level Up, that's why we need this post.
The incident took place in Season's Beatings V: Redemption (Ohio) on October 16, 2010. Umehara played in the worst environment as it had no stage and he was surrounded by the attendants who apparently cheered on his opponents. They didn't just stand near, they almost leaned him. Once he lost, Arturo Sanchez (or Sabin, a Dhalsim player) who, at the time, was a part of Team Spooky, ran (violently) from the commentator desk to congratulate the opponent and kicked Umehara's chair. (You could see this on the stream.) Umehara, who was invited to the tournament, was pushed out of the sight by the crowd, like he wasn't needed anymore.
Not only that, Sabin, who was a commentator, made an unclaimed remark on the microphone that Umehara didn't want to play on the stream because he's picky about the screen mornitor and was afraid to lose on the stream. (He later added that Umehara tried to have some privilege on a forum. At the time, Sabin had his own propaganda against Umehara.) Spooky, as the head of the team, didn't do anything about this, and even agreed with him. No apology so far.

My close friend is Daigo's personal translator this weekend, and Daigo didn't mention anything about the stream station being wack or the EC/WC being disrespectful or refusing to play there or whatever. So -- we have headphones for him that Madcatz gave us as prizes because Markman is gdlk (as is Hori!) So I guess he isn't butthurt about whatever you think you saw on the stream, don't worry about it. And yeah, he did look tired and was I think asleep for parts of the 5-on-5. You know what he did after I asked him if it was fun or boring, assuming he wasn't that into it and would want to go back to the hotel right away? Gave me a big, genuine smile and said "fun!" and asked us to bring him more money matches, which we did.

Final Round 2011 Summary
Tokido went to Atlanta to compete in Final Round 2011 on March 11-13.
Friday
- He received a confirmation that his family is safe. (Earthquake related, Tokido lives in the same city as KSK, if I'm not mistaken.)
- He won Super Street Fighter IV 3 on 3. His team has Ricky Ortiz and Justin Wong. (But Wong didn't play for the most part.) Tokido beat Banana Ken, Sanford, Wolfkrone, Mike Ross, F. Champ. He's better than ever. Solid. No mistakes. Completely different from Evo 2010. He even pulled off a Tokido Copter combo on Wolfkrone's C. Viper, and she's the character he hates the most.
- His SSF4 team name is "Happy Set" which is also his alias in this tournament. I don't know the reason why he didn't use "Tokido"
Saturday
- He went through the third day on SSF4 in Winners, MvC3 in Losers, BlazBlue CS in top 8. He got 17th place on Tekken 6 and Arcana Heart 3, 25th place in Guilty Gear XX AC, 3rd place in SSF2HDR, 1st in SSF2 Turbo.
- His MvC3 team is the same with SSF4, but the team name "Jwongg Saves the Day" tells everything.
Sunday
- Tokido somehow lost to PR Balrog who came from Losers twice and got just 2nd place...
- PR Balrog eliminated him again in MvC3 top 8.

The stream
Team Spooky moved to Justin.tv long time ago and does everything there since then. It's a big mistake because not only it has an inferior design, is slow, and has connection cap for small countries, I have a serious problem browsing it since 2009! Spooky always complains about stream mirror but this actually forces a mirror itself. (I saw someone asked Inaba-san (GG) to do a mirror on Ustream.) I guess Spooky gets money from doing it on Justin.tv.
I saw some people call for Spooky for Evo streaming, that'd be a bigger failure. Evo is now a world-class event, so what will you explain about having a connection cap? What even worse is Spooky reportedly said "My streams don't go down during grand finals." which aimed toward Level Up (Evo 2010 streamer). But let me get this straight, Spooky can't compete LU overall.
- Team Spooky is a one-man team and relies heavily on donation. If there's a serious problem in software/hardware, they (or he) will not fix it faster than LU, since Spooky simply has less funds and staff than LU. Spooky is being lucky because the streams didn't slip yet, but once it happened then there'll be no argument.
- Level Up won't let a bum to commentate a stream. Who wants people who knows the games but have to use profanity every 15 seconds? (implying that they can actually commentate at all)

For the first time, an official website for a tournament displays the results quickly from the first day and in DETAILS. Not even Evo did this. I'm impressed. Everyone should do this.

The stream
The stream was smooth. No lag at all. This's when you lower bit rate. I think it's good, because smooth LQ is better than lag HQ.
The biggest mistake is, in day 1, they used the worst commentators known to Street Fighter. Magus (glasses wearing Chun-Li player) and Darry (if I'm not mistaken) showed too little knowledge and they cannot entertain, especially Darry who randomly shouted what he thinks is cool. They had James Chen, Mike Ross, and JuiceBox around but they only put them on shortly. Surprisingly, JuiceBox is a good commentartor which is new to me. In the second day, however, they replaced them with S-Kill, Chen, and JB, THANK YOU.
In the first day, Umehara was on the stream only 2 times in SF4 singles. If I knew I wouldn't bother staying up that long. (sleepy+bad commentators) No one updated the bracket information until the top 8 was decided.

NSB TV, Kao TV upgraded
NSB TV began using a new stream broadcasting program in yesterday's show. It seems like the program is Wirecast, as Gama used to mention on Tuesday.
I think the Japaneses were impressed by the presentation of Team Spooky's stream in Canada Cup. (Spooky uses Wirecast.)
After NSB TV ended, KSK tweeted that he bought Ustream Producer PRO ($199) and was learning. It's chain reaction, I guess.

Canada Cup 2010 summary

- GG organizer, Inaba-san, mentioned that Mago won $1,600 (Canadian dollar?) in the money match tournament on Friday night. Umehara got 2nd.
- Umehara won a casual exhibition 7-0 to the Canadians losing just 4 rounds. Mago lost to JSMaster, but won the rest (6) losing 5 rounds. (Details here)
- (Mago interview) He said he doesn't really listen to music but he liked Porno Graffitti back then. Mike Ross joked that everyone likes porn. (Though they actually know the band.)
- The commentators didn't know that Umehara is using noise-canceling headphones. I thought everyone knew this.
- Around 13,100 viewers peak.
- GODSGARDEN team restreamed, they showed a video letter from Umehara at the end. This video is made for school festival at Trident Computer Technical School.

- He's not married.
- He unintentionally dodged the question "Who's the strongest player?" He said they're many strong players and he couldn't tell. Thank God. Because if he answers, other players will be like "Daigo looked down on me!" like what happened months ago. (Umehara isn't an Internet person so he doesn't watch and know many foreign players.) Also, people should stop asking this kind of questions.

Thoughts
The stream
Team Spooky almost failed for being mad at the restreaming when GODSGARDEN team was doing it. GG team didn't know what to do but Spooky's face made an awkward atmosphere for a long while. It seems like he cares too much about the viewer count and doesn't like a free PR. (And GG will only get 1,500 viewers due to Nico's limit.)
In the past, I heard Team Spooky used to restream a tournament from the other team before so I don't think Spooky has the right to say this. He also keeps telling people that it's all our fault if the stream isn't smooth, which is not quite accurate. I can confirmed that most of the time, Spooky's stream is NOT smooth, same with the entire Ustream. Why? Bandwidth has nothing to do with this is incorrect. But even with broadband, it's useless if it can't deliver the consistency of the dara transfer. This happens when you're in another countries or living far away outside the city. Setting is another cause, this's why the Japanese restream was smoother than the real stream in latest SoCal Regionals, even they're both using Ustream. (Nico also never lags, unless bad day) What he should say is "We don't want to lower the stream's bit rate, so you better get a better Internet."
In the end, Spooky gave an acknowledgement and KSK said it's a relief.
Anyway, everyone including me must thank Spooky for doing this. Other than the lag, the sound quality of the microphones, and the off-topic chatting, everything was good. The onscreen graphics was great. We got to see both player names and team names and he kepts updating the score on the screen, unlike Level|Up series. He didn't keep people waiting. His play-by-play commentary was good as well.
Guile - Fei Long
I totally expected Ryu vs. Fei Long with Umehara's new strategy, but Umehara showed once again why he's the best. Using Guile to counter Fei Long is very effective. Sonic Boom has faster recover than Hadoken so Mago can't jump in. Mago has to use Rekkuu to get in, but that's when he has to take a big risk against Flying Buster Drop, with great reaction to boost. Mago's Boxer
Many people didn't know that Mago has Boxer as a sub, but if you saw Kao TV, you'd know. In a very old video, Mago even revealed to Umehara himself that he's been practicing Boxer.
- GG organizer, Inaba-san, mentioned that Mago won $1,600 (Canadian dollar?) in the money match tournament on Friday night. Umehara got 2nd.

- He unintentionally dodged the question "Who's the strongest player?" He said they're many strong players and he couldn't tell. Thank God. Because if he answers, other players will be like "Daigo looked down on me!" like what happened months ago. (Umehara isn't an Internet person so he doesn't watch and know many foreign players.) Also, people should stop asking this kind of questions.

The stream
Team Spooky almost failed for being mad at the restreaming when GODSGARDEN team was doing it. GG team didn't know what to do but Spooky's face made an awkward atmosphere for a long while. It seems like he cares too much about the viewer count and doesn't like a free PR. (And GG will only get 1,500 viewers due to Nico's limit.)
In the past, I heard Team Spooky used to restream a tournament from the other team before so I don't think Spooky has the right to say this. He also keeps telling people that it's all our fault if the stream isn't smooth, which is not quite accurate. I can confirmed that most of the time, Spooky's stream is NOT smooth, same with the entire Ustream. Why? Bandwidth has nothing to do with this is incorrect. But even with broadband, it's useless if it can't deliver the consistency of the dara transfer. This happens when you're in another countries or living far away outside the city. Setting is another cause, this's why the Japanese restream was smoother than the real stream in latest SoCal Regionals, even they're both using Ustream. (Nico also never lags, unless bad day) What he should say is "We don't want to lower the stream's bit rate, so you better get a better Internet."
In the end, Spooky gave an acknowledgement and KSK said it's a relief.
Anyway, everyone including me must thank Spooky for doing this. Other than the lag, the sound quality of the microphones, and the off-topic chatting, everything was good. The onscreen graphics was great. We got to see both player names and team names and he kepts updating the score on the screen, unlike Level|Up series. He didn't keep people waiting. His play-by-play commentary was good as well.
Guile - Fei Long
I totally expected Ryu vs. Fei Long with Umehara's new strategy, but Umehara showed once again why he's the best. Using Guile to counter Fei Long is very effective. Sonic Boom has faster recover than Hadoken so Mago can't jump in. Mago has to use Rekkuu to get in, but that's when he has to take a big risk against Flying Buster Drop, with great reaction to boost.
