The new Tougeki? Sega's event to feature 5 national tournaments

It's revealed that Sega's arcade gaming event, called "Japan Gamer's Live," will feature 5 national tournaments of 5 arcade fighting games:
  • Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax (August 30)
  • Dead or Alive Ultimate: Arcade (August 31)
  • Guilty Gear Xrd (August 30)
  • BlazBlue Chronophantasma (August 30)
  • Persona 4 The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold (August 30)

It's basically DBFC and DOA5UA national tournament combined with Arc Revolution Cup 2014. More or less, it's a collaboration between Sega, Koei Tecmo, Arc System Works, and Atlus.

Japan Gamer's Live will be held at Tokyo Big Sight TFT Hall on August 30-31. It'll also feature other arcade games (non-fighting) and some free trial. Talk show and live performance are also planned.

In 2012, it was announced that Tougeki will be suspended indefinitely (though we can say that it's dead). If JGL continues like this and becomes a yearly event, it'll not simply replace Tougeki, it'll become a better Tougeki as JGL is backed directly by a group of game publishers that is capable.

[Video] Umehara's Guilty Gear legend from Tougeki 2003

- This's a documentary about team "Ore to Omae to Daigorou" (Me and You and Daigorou) in Tougeki 2003's Guilty Gear XX finals. The format was 3 on 3.
- The team consists of Arisaka (Slayer), Pachi (Faust), Daigo Umehara (Sol).
- Pachi is now working on BlazBlue series in Arc System Works.
- Umehara qualified for the (Tougeki 2003) finals (last day) on 4 games: Capcom vs. SNK 2, Street Fighter III 3rd Strike, Guilty Gear XX, Super Street Fighter II X.
- Arisaka and Pachi formed the team and invited Umehara.
- It has matches until semifinals. Arisaka couldn't win a game before that.
- You can hear Gama no Abura's voice in the background as he was Tougeki commentator.
- The legendary match was when they faced team "Hoshi no Koe". Denpa Jikkyou meme was born from the game between Umehara and Shishamo.

Tougeki suspended indefinitely

The organizer of Tougeki announced today via the official site that the fighting game tournament Tougeki or Super Battle Opera will be suspended indefinitely.

The news come out only just hours after we posted about Arcadia going bimonthly. As you probably know Tougeki is run by Arcadia staff. If Arcadia is in serious trouble then it must also affect Tougeki.

This thing was actually hinted by the organizer since last year when they announced Tougeki 2012. A message was posted in Japanese on the official site saying that Tougeki 2012 may be the last.

The nightmare that is called Tougeki 2012

It is a shame though that Tougeki has to end with a bad memory. We already have a post about (some of) this. In order to make more money, Tougeki was held together with a game festival so they can sell expensive tickets. The "festival" was held in a remote open area and attendances had to suffer the heat. The sunlight made it hard to see the game monitor and the staff had to hold sunscreen behind the player at some point. There were also reports about malfunctions of some game machines. It was clear that most people were there because of Tougeki and an Idolm@ster concert. Other stage shows did not receive much attention. In the last day after Tougeki finals was over, the last talk show (as scheduled) on the stage was cancelled, probably because people did not want to be in the middle of nowhere in the dark for nothing.

Photos showed that there were a lot of empty seats, so we highly doubt that the event was even a success commercially.

Who to blame?

A big fighting game tournament is a great way to stimulate the arcade scene so magazine can sell. The problem comes when the tournament itself needs money. Tougeki is organized by Arcadia staff with supports from mother company Enterbrain. Enterbrain is a big media publisher that also has the famous gaming magazine Famitsu under its roof. But while Arcadia has become weak, Famitsu is still going strong. Without fear of losing magazine buyers, Famitsu has the latest news on its website and now has a weekly show on Niconico. It suggests that there was some mismanagement going on in Arcadia division. Arcadia and Tougeki were led by the same person – Masashi Sawatari. He appeared a lot last year to promote Tougeki, that was when we learnt about his characteristic. He did not look convincing and he did not sound so sure about the things he said. He did not know much about KVO, a tournament that Tougeki gave quota for the finals. In short, you will never want to let this guy manage your properties.

The guy left Enterbrain three months after Tougeki 2012.

Tougeki replacement

Quick question, what do we have now? Quick answer, nothing. You need some huge funding in order to organize a true national tournament. Tougeki had qualifiers in all regions in Japan and not just one title. And since Tougeki was arcade tournament, the national qualifiers can be done with the supports of game centers. If Tougeki replacement is console tournament then you need to rent places around the country for the qualifiers. This is not to mention the rent of a place big and good enough for the finals.

Regional qualifiers are important as some players do not spend ten of thousands yen to travel to Tokyo unless they are guaranteed to be in the finals. Because at that point, they can at least get their names or faces recognized.

Anyway, it is funny though that now the Street Fighter players have no national tournament to attend while there is still national tournament for BlazBlue, Persona 4 The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena, Melty Blood, and even Under Night In-Birth. These game are back by their respective publishers. Will Capcom jump in now for a yearly national tournament? It is hard to tell when they are not promoting something. Capcom Japan never gave prize money (or anything worthwhile except certificates) even Street Fighter IV is the most popular fighting game. Last year, Capcom also "celebrated" Street Fighter's 25th anniversary with pay-per-view tournament.

Chokaigi 2 officially announced

Dwango (Nico Nico's mother company) officially announced yesterday that Chokaigi 2 will be held at Makuhari Messe on April 27-28, 2013 (The initial announcement was made in July)

Chokaigi (or Chou Kaigi) is a big convention of Nico Nico related subcultures. It had booths, stage shows, concerts, etc. Chou Tougeki was also held inside. The event was the first Tougeki 2012 qualifier and had SF4 exhibition matches between top players including Daigo Umehara.

Although this year Chokaigi attracted a lot of people, it didn't make any profit. In fact, it made a huge loss of 470.8 million yen (or almost $6 million). But the organizer insists to have another one, saying they have learned from the mistakes.

Makuhari Messe will be used again next year. The convention center is well-known for hosting Tokyo Game Show.

New Tougeki scandals (2012 edition)

Tougeki 2012 is this weekend but we cannot wait to unfold these scandals. There are already 2 scams, pre-Tougeki 2012 P4U tournament and Game Summer Festival 2012.

Pre-Tougeki 2012 P4U (mini) tournament
The first scam is PPV pre-Tougeki 2012 P4U tournament. The show was 5 hour long. But there were 3 corners before that. The time table was not written beforehand, so no one expected that. They had viewers wait 1 hour 48 minutes before the actual tournament. Luckily, it is offline tournament, it would have less value otherwise.

The time table
  1. Opening talk (15 minutes)
  2. A sample of Cho Tougeki Exhibition match (Umehara vs. Nuki, Kazunoko vs. Fei Long) (originally 1 hour, but they cut to 30 minutes due to complaints?)
  3. Tougeki Q&A talk (20 minutes)
  4. P4U introduction & gameplay demonstration  (35 minutes)
  5. The actual content

Why did they use PPV stream to promote Tougeki?
Why did they show SF4 on a PPV P4U stream?
Why did they show Umehara when he is not confirmed to go Tougeki 2012?
Why did they introduce something that people are paying to see?
Time table is not showed outside the show, was that on purpose?

The actual tournament started at 0:40 (JST) after midnight. And again, this is pay-per-view.

Game Summer Festival 2012
In order to make more money from Tougeki, they make Tougeki a part of a big game event. Everything outside Tougeki is a filler.

This big event is not actually big judging from the contents. The stage shows are mostly a game played by a gamer. The concerts are mostly from minor artists.

Here is the important part. If you are not already qualified for Tougeki Finals (a blue ticket holder) and wish to participate the appointed day qualifier, you are forced to buy the ticket of Game Summer Festival which will cost up to 7,500-8,500 yen for both days. Moreover, number of participants is limited even though they will accept all the applications. It will be decided by lottery. You will not get a refund if you are not chosen.

In Japan, with 8,500 yen, it is the money you pay for a concert of a top artist(s) of the country with approximate 30 songs or more.

They are unfairly making big money off players, their friends or relatives, and their fans.

The monopoly
We again have to remind you that Tougeki will always get away as long as Japan does not have a new open national fighting game tournaments event. Currently, only the game publishers have the power to do so. Arc System Works is stepping up, but publishers like Capcom only do so once in a while to promote stuff. TOPANGA and GODSGARDEN does not have the power. They can only organize a small one or invite-only.

Tougeki 2012: stream links, prices revealed

Nico Nico revealed today the final details of Tougeki 2012 streams. The links and the pricing are as below.

Note that the pricing is the same as Tougeki 2010 (2 days / 12 titles).

    Tougeki 2012: first stream details

Tougeki producer just revealed a few minutes ago on tonight official pre-Tougeki 2012 P4U tournament that Tougeki 2012 will be streamed on Nico Nico and it will be pay-per-view.

Tougeki started streaming on Nico Nico since 2010. The net ticket in both 2010 and 2011 were priced at 1,500 yen. But we expect the ticket to be priced higher than the last year since Tougeki 2012 has 8 titles, Tougeki 2011 had only 4.

Tougeki 2012 Finals will be held together with Game Summer Festival 2012. The whole event will have stage shows of games from various genres, as well as concerts. It is organized by Enterbrain, the publisher of Famitsu and Arcadia magazine. Tougeki is also under its roof.

Game Summer Festival 2012 will be held on August 4-5. The ticket (including the access to Tougeki 2012 venue ) prices are as below.
    • 4,500 yen for each day (early purchase)
    • 7,500 yen for both days (early purchase)
    • 5,500 yen for each day (actual date)
    • 8,500 yen for both days (actual date)

    Pay-per-view pre-Tougeki P4U tournament planned

Nico Nico announced today that it will stream pre-Tougeki 2012 P4U tournament on July 28 (this Saturday) starting from 23:00 JST.

The double elimination tournament will have 8 players who already qualified the Tougeki 2012 Finals. The stream will be pay-per-view however. The net ticket is priced at 300 yen.

It looks like this PPV tournament is Tougeki's idea. And it is very weird. We heard some of the names, but do not really know any of these players. They will also compete anyway in 1 on 1 format, same with this. There is also no indication whether this is offline or online.

This is a blatant move if they really think they can just make money out of a stream of anyone who are good at a popular game. Because style and personality is much more important than being good alone.

    SBO2012: Umehara cancels 3rd Strike

Haitani revealed almost 2 weeks ago that Daigo Umehara will not participate in Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike in Tougeki 2012.

On April 28, Haitani and Momochi successfully convinced Umehara to join them for 3rd Strike tournament in this year Tougeki. But when Tougeki announced its date of the finals on May 24, Umehara found out that there is a schedule conflict. He already has a plan on that day.

However, Haitani and Momochi team will still compete even with 2 members.

Tougeki 2012 will be held between August 4-5, and 3rd Strike is on the second day.

    SF3 3rd Strike qualifier

    - Momochi later revealed that Haitani talked to him and decided about SF3 and SF4 team for Tougeki 2012. They still wanted one member. It's for fun so they don't want to drag SF3 players with them. They considered SF4 players instead. They approached Umehara after TOPANGA Charity Cup 2012 but they were drunk at the time so it was not really confirmed. (Haitani and Momochi live in south west, but Umehara live in Tokyo. It's hard to go to a local qualifier together.)
    - Famitsu reported that Haitani talked to Umehara again before the finals, Umehara said "If you won, then [teaming up] is okay." He later laughed because Haitani actually won it.

Tougeki 2012 arcade qualifiers to begin on May 3

The full details of Tougeki 2012 qualifiers of arcade games are now revealed in the official site. The qualifiers will begin on May 3 and will end on July 8.

The site now officially confirmed that there will be Soulcalibur V and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom tournaments in Tougeki 2012.

Two weeks ago, it was announced that the winning team of KVO 2012's UMvC3 can play in Tougeki 2012 finals.

Umehara confirmed for exhibition in Chokaigi

As previously announced, Nico Nico restreamed Tougeki 2011 for free yesterday. But the show also had a talk corner for some announcements, mainly for the complete list of the players who will participate exhibition matches in Tougeki's qualifiers and special event in Nico Nico's Chokaigi which is called Chou Tougeki.

Good news is Daigo Umehara is confirmed to be there. The bad news is there will not be streaming of the exhibition matches on April 29. Although the qualifiers will be streamed for free.

    1. Fuudo
    2. MDR
    3. Haitani
    4. Mago
    5. Tokido
    6. Kazunoko
    7. Uryo
    8. Momochi
    9. Umehara
    10. Nuki

This is actually 2 on 2 tournament and the players on the list will be paired randomly by drawing.

Nuki himself also appeared to talk on the show with Tougeki producer and Nico's staff Neo Tower. (They revealed that they actually were at Evolution once and went to the swimming pool together. They said there were around 30 Japanese that year.)

KVO UMvC3 champs get SBO blue tickets

It is announced a couple hours ago that the winning team of KVO 2012 will receive the right to play in Tougeki 2012 finals.

KVO 2012's UMvC3 3 on 3 tournament will be held on May 4, then KVO x GODSGARDEN will take place after that at night. Ageo Joe (Kusoru) is likely to play in both tournaments at the moment.

As revealed before, Tougeki is planning to add Soulcalibur V and UMvC3 to the lineup this year. In the past, Tougeki is all about arcade games.

    Tuesday, April 3, 2012

Big announcements from Tougeki: UMvC3, Touhou, etc.

Tonight on Nico, a show was arranged for some big announcements from Tougeki organizer. Tougeki producer and Fuudo were also there.

    Here is our summary.

Umehara will be invited for exhibition match in Nico Nico Chokaigi
They asked the viewers who they want to watch in the 8-man exhibition matches. Umehara was named, though they will invite him anyway. Confirmed players are Haitani, Fuudo, MDR.

All tournaments in Chokaigi are single (1 on 1) and winners can choose teammates
The winners of Tougeki qualifiers in Chokaigi get to choose teammates if the tournament is 2 on 2 or 3 on 3 in the finals.

Tougeki to try double elimination in Chokaigi
They are planning to try double elimination system, but for SSF4AE2012 tournament only.

Tougeki to deal with doujin/PC game for the first time
Since there is Touhou booth in Chokaigi, Tougeki will have a Touhou Hisoutensoku special tournament in Chokaigi. (We actually have a post about this game.)

Nico to stream Tougeki 2011 for free
Since they did not release Tougeki 2011 DVD, they decided to stream it for free on April 22.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 being planned for Tougeki 2012
They want to add Soulcalibur V -- and UMvC3.

In the end, they said that UMvC3 is the last title so we now have a complete lineup. Leaving Street Fighter X Tekken behind is another bad news for Capcom's Ono team. The game is being given the cold shoulder from around the world. The game suffers from many issues. Evo 2012 does not accept its Gem System. Now Tougeki does not accept it at all. In contrast, Capcom's Niitsuma team is making a big comeback with UMvC3 as the Japanese start to give it attention.

Let us remind you about titles.
    1. Aquapazza (2 on 2)
    2. Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena (1 on 1)
    3. Street Fighter III 3rd Strike (3 on 3)
    4. Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition Ver.2012 (3 on 3)
    5. Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Unlimited (2 on 2)
    6. Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown (3 on 3)
    7. Soulcalibur V (being planned)
    8. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (being planned)

Tougeki 2012 (finals) is still not dated. But judging from everything, it should last at least 2 days.

Official BlazBlue Nationals now highest-paid tourney in Japan

The announcement on the yesterday evening revealed that Blue Revo, the BlazBlue Official National Tournament, this year on March 24 has one million yen prize money for the winner. This means Blue Revo will become the new highest-paid fighting game tournament in Japan, overthowing TOPANGA League.

    Prize list
1st place - 1,000,000 yen and "Blue Revo Ruler" ingame title.
2nd place - 300,000 yen and "Blue Revo Finalist" ingame title.
3rd place - 100,000 yen and "Blue Revo Best 4" ingame title.

However, Blue Revo is a 3 on 3 tournament, the money will be split between members. The prize-winners will also have to join Arc System Works's future activities. And if you only count player-organized tournaments, TOPANGA League is still No.1.

This news is good for Japanese players, but bad for Capcom's image. Capcom is well-known for not giving any prize money. In the latest official national tournament, the best prize was certificates, trophies, ingame titles, and 17,000 yen arcade sticks.

As expected, we made a list for you to compare.
    1. Blue Revo (team, 2012) - 1,000,000 yen
    2. TOPANGA League (single, 2012) - 555,555 yen (related post)
    3. GODSGARDEN Online #2 (single, 2010) - 500,000 yen
    4. GODSGARDEN #4 (single, 2011) - 250,000 yen
    5. GODSGARDEN #3 (single, 2011) - 200,000 yen
    6. GODSGARDEN #5 (single, 2012) - 100,000 yen
    7. Official Tekken 6 tournament Japan Round (single, 2010) - 100,000 yen

First Tougeki 2012 qualifier announced, console game being planned

It's announced today that the first Tougeki 2012 qualifier will be held in Nico Nico's Chokaigi event at Makuhari Messe between April 28-29.

This special qualifier will have all the previously-announced 6 titles. The winners will receive the right to play in the finals without having to play in a block qualifier. There'll also be exhibition matches from star players on the stage.

The Tougeki organizer also revealed today that they're planning to add Soulcalibur V to the lineup even though it's a console game. (Tougeki is an arcade-only tournament.)

Chokaigi is a big event packed with Nico Nico related booths and stages. There's entrance fee for the event and the party inside the hall.
