The organizer of Tougeki announced today via the official site that the fighting game tournament Tougeki or Super Battle Opera will be suspended indefinitely.
The news come out only just hours after we posted about Arcadia going bimonthly. As you probably know Tougeki is run by Arcadia staff. If Arcadia is in serious trouble then it must also affect Tougeki.
This thing was actually hinted by the organizer since last year when they announced Tougeki 2012. A message was posted in Japanese on the official site saying that Tougeki 2012 may be the last.
The nightmare that is called Tougeki 2012
It is a shame though that Tougeki has to end with a bad memory. We already have a post about (some of) this. In order to make more money, Tougeki was held together with a game festival so they can sell expensive tickets. The "festival" was held in a remote open area and attendances had to suffer the heat. The sunlight made it hard to see the game monitor and the staff had to hold sunscreen behind the player at some point. There were also reports about malfunctions of some game machines. It was clear that most people were there because of Tougeki and an Idolm@ster concert. Other stage shows did not receive much attention. In the last day after Tougeki finals was over, the last talk show (as scheduled) on the stage was cancelled, probably because people did not want to be in the middle of nowhere in the dark for nothing.
Photos showed that there were a lot of empty seats, so we highly doubt that the event was even a success commercially.
Who to blame?
A big fighting game tournament is a great way to stimulate the arcade scene so magazine can sell. The problem comes when the tournament itself needs money. Tougeki is organized by Arcadia staff with supports from mother company Enterbrain. Enterbrain is a big media publisher that also has the famous gaming magazine Famitsu under its roof. But while Arcadia has become weak, Famitsu is still going strong. Without fear of losing magazine buyers, Famitsu has the latest news on its website and now has a weekly show on Niconico. It suggests that there was some mismanagement going on in Arcadia division. Arcadia and Tougeki were led by the same person – Masashi Sawatari. He appeared a lot last year to promote Tougeki, that was when we learnt about his characteristic. He did not look convincing and he did not sound so sure about the things he said. He did not know much about KVO, a tournament that Tougeki gave quota for the finals. In short, you will never want to let this guy manage your properties.
The guy left Enterbrain three months after Tougeki 2012.
Tougeki replacement
Quick question, what do we have now? Quick answer, nothing. You need some huge funding in order to organize a true national tournament. Tougeki had qualifiers in all regions in Japan and not just one title. And since Tougeki was arcade tournament, the national qualifiers can be done with the supports of game centers. If Tougeki replacement is console tournament then you need to rent places around the country for the qualifiers. This is not to mention the rent of a place big and good enough for the finals.
Regional qualifiers are important as some players do not spend ten of thousands yen to travel to Tokyo unless they are guaranteed to be in the finals. Because at that point, they can at least get their names or faces recognized.
Anyway, it is funny though that now the Street Fighter players have no national tournament to attend while there is still national tournament for BlazBlue, Persona 4 The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena, Melty Blood, and even Under Night In-Birth. These game are back by their respective publishers. Will Capcom jump in now for a yearly national tournament? It is hard to tell when they are not promoting something. Capcom Japan never gave prize money (or anything worthwhile except certificates) even Street Fighter IV is the most popular fighting game. Last year, Capcom also "celebrated" Street Fighter's 25th anniversary with pay-per-view tournament.

Arcadia magazine going bimonthly
It's announced yesterday that the Japanese arcade gaming magazine Arcadia will change from releasing monthly to bimonthly, starting from April 30 (June issue). They explained that the change is due to the growth of arcade gaming in Japan and they want to cover more games, more genres. The magazine is expected to have 60,000 copies printed.
The porting of the popular fighting games to the home consoles is always a big problem but game companies like Sega and Square Enix, who also own game centers, are there to make sure the business doesn't go down. Square Enix had come up with arcade games that literally can't be played on consoles, such as Lord of Vermillion and Gunslinger Stratos. Lord of Vermillion is a trading card game that plays like action game – players have to move their physical cards on the sensor board to move their characters on the screen. Gunslinger Stratos is a 4 on 4 light-gun third-person shooter where in-game weapons change accordingly to how the guns (two guns per player) are handled.
However, Arcadia going bimonthly (once every 2 months) suggests that the magazine has had poor sales, because the price will still be the same, meaning the number of pages will probably be the same. It looks like they'll focus more on Arcadia Extra (guidebook dedicated to one game).
Arcadia was launched in 1999. E-book version (via bookwalker.jp) was launched in 2011. Daigo Umehara is one of the columnists since 2009 and the compilation of his column was released in February this year.

Kakugeibu! vol.1 releasing today (Umehara, Tokido, Mago are junior highschool girls!)
Tip from Akiki-san (Sako's wife). The first volume of Kakugeibu!, the manga that has Daigo Umehara, Tokido, and Mago turn into a small girl is being released today in Japan.
Kakugeibu! (Kaku Game Bukatsu! or KGB or Fighting Game Club!) is the story about junior highschool girls in Kakugeibu (Fighting Art Club, same sound but different meaning), a school club of fighting games. As seen below, these characters are based on real players.
Kakugeibu! is a "yonkoma" (4-panel comic) that was first serialized in Arcadia Magazine since last year. Many of yonkoma were later turn into anime and became a hit (like Lucky Star and K-ON!), will this one make it?!

Daigo Umehara's new book "Umehara Column: Ken no Maki" is already out of stock on Amazon Japan after 2 days. You can still buy it now but will have to wait 1-3 weeks.

Let's hear the whole story (SBO related)
I want to comment on fubarduck's story on Wakeup Shoryuken E073.
"SBO should be like Evo"
That's not going to happen, as everyone should already know. SBO itself is organized by Arcadia acarde gaming magazine. It's I-help-you-you-help-me relationship like many companies out there. Arcadia's main objective is to stimulate arcade scene, so they can sell the magazine. However, the tournament is also a good thing since it's actually the only true national level unofficial tournament. (because they have local area qualifiers) This's where players around the country can test their skills and get some prize. It's as-good-as-it-gets standard. The point is you can't treat it like community's event.
"SBO had 40,000 viewers on the stream"
Nico Nico doesn't display number of viewers. The number he referred to is attendee. (more like total unique session) It will only increase and never go down. I'd be surprised if the actual net ticket buyers exceed 10,000. The most realistic guess is 7,000 maximum.
"They made a lot of money from the stream"
Like I said, I don't think they made a lot of money. The costs of equipments, the big space in Makuhari Messe, the Nico stream, the staff. And since it's not organized by the community, they probably pay a lot for the staff, as opposed to asking for volunteers. These costs is also another reason why they shouldn't want a longer tournament (AKA double elimination) because some fees are charged hourly.
"SBO was so obsessed with getting Daigo to play in the tournament (and that caused the incident)"
Half truth. Do you know how Mago and Tokido got their spot in SBO? Because Mago won SSF4AE x Tougeki: Natsu no Jin, and then he chose Tokido as his partner. Mago played 4 matches. Tokido won zero round. (Shiro-Shungoku Neurosis probably played at least 18 matches for the spot including the retries.) On top of that, they both were invited by Capcom. They didn't come from participating any selected tournament or the qualifier like the rest of the players in Natsu no Jin. By directing all attention to Umehara alone is not fair.
That's all. I'm not saying SBO's miscalculation/management was acceptable. I just feel that unnecessary things were said just because someone read too much strangers' posts on a message board (and probably the same persons with different IPs who try to act like the majority). Some people attack SBO just because they want a free stream. Some are mad because they didn't see their favorite player enough after paying 1,500 yen. Some do it just for fun. If you continue to listen without thinking, eventually you'll become a tool for them.
On another topic/subject, I saw certain pretentious haters riding SBO scandal wave. It's pretty funny because what they condemn is actually what they did.
Who blatantly mistreated a certain Japanese player on several occasions both in and outside a tournament?
Who prevented a certain Japanese player from playing on the stream after he paid 200,000 yen to be there?
You won't find the answers elsewhere. Because this's how Fighting Game Community (笑) works.

Nico to stream Tougeki 2011
As expected, there will be Tougeki 2011 stream, but it's pay-per-view like last year. Nico Nico will handle the stream and the live ticket is 1,500 yen, same as last year.
This year's Tougeki (Super Battle Opera) Finals will again be held in Tokyo Game Show 2011 on September 17. The event has 4 tournaments: Aquapazza, BlazBlue CSII, SSF2X GC, SSF4AE.

Arcadia Extra Vol. 85: Umehara Believer 2nd wave
In March, Arcadia Extra Vol. 84 which is a SSF4AE (game center edition) guidebook gave away 100 lucky readers the title "Umehara Shinja" (ウメハラ信者 or Umehara Believer) and it proved to be a (very) effective way to sell a book, as some people bought more than one copy for more chance.
Arcadia Extra Vol. 85 was announced a month ago to be another complete SSF4AE guidebook for the consoles version. But since the game was directly ported, there's little to no reason to buy this if you already bought the old one. Apparently the publisher knew this, but it's too late when they also knew your weakness!
The latest information shows that the mook will give away again "Umehara Shinja" title and also "ARCADIA" title to 200 lucky readers. (presumably for console use)
The mook will be released on June 30. (You can buy it here.)

Umehara Believer winners announced
The winners of "Umehara Believer" campaign was announced just an hour ago. It's like a dream, but Gama no Abura, Nagoya Street Battle organizer and one of the true Umehara fanboys, won it. ChocoBlanka also won it.
In March, people who bought Arcadia Extra Vol.84 got a chance to win "Umehara Shinja" (ウメハラ信者 or Umehara Believer) title for their Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition card*. From his tweet a couple months ago, Gama-san apparently bought more than one. And ChocoBlanka also sent 2 postcards.
*NESYS card used to record and track your data and stats in arcade game centers. You can modify your character this way.
Anyway, Acqua, another true Umehara fanboy, didn't make it. He said he "wants to cry" because he wants it so much. I feel very sorry for him, because on the same day he just had a traffic accident. He got hit by a car sending him flying away for about 2 metres.... He (miraculously) suffered only a minor injury but he said that was closest to death.
Update 1: Gama-san accidentally cancelled his ID that has the title....
Update 2: ChocoBlanka was so excited. She went out immediately and came back with a picture of her "Umehara Believer."

Arcadia 2011.6 (No.133)
The upcoming Arcadia magazine (April 30 release) will reveal a collaboration between Kinniku-Man and Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition. What's it I don't know. Maybe a new costume pack? The cover of the magazine shows Kinniku-Man in Ryu costume. A new character is unlikely.

Umehara on Game Labo
The latest issue of Game Labo magazine which is released today features a big scoop (13 pages) about Street Fighter. It's like an introduction to SF. You'll learn about the series' history and the like. They also introduce famous players from Japan and America. Of course, there should be Daigo Umehara, too. Interestingly, the table of contents on the website has a character that looks like Umehara in Ryu costume.
Umehara has his own article in Arcadia magazine every month since middle of 2009 and is like Enterbrain boy. (Enterbrain = Arcadia and Famitsu publisher) This's unusual because Game Labo is a game magazine from a different publishing company.

Arcadia Extra Vol.84
I tried to write about this book once but I waited for more info. After that, I just forgot it. It's released on March 2.
This Arcadia Extra Vol.84 has complete data of all 37 characters in Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition. The book also has character counter-plans and combos in its 176 pages.
The point is the book gives away a special title "Umehara Shinja" (Umehara believer/fanboy) to 100 (lucky) readers. I assume that it's title for SSF4AE.
This Arcadia Extra Vol.84 has complete data of all 37 characters in Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition. The book also has character counter-plans and combos in its 176 pages.
The point is the book gives away a special title "Umehara Shinja" (Umehara believer/fanboy) to 100 (lucky) readers. I assume that it's title for SSF4AE.

Daigo Umehara usually appears on the cover of Arcadia magazine as he gets more and more popular, nothing new. But this month his picture looks more like a singer!

NSB TV mentioned on Famitsu
It's strange that NSB TV stream was mentioned on Famitsu's blog (written by editors). They never mentioned GODSGARDEN.
It's understandable if they don't want to. GG is co-hosting Evo Japan so it's a big threat to Tougeki (Super Battle Opera) which is organized by Arcadia, a magazine under the same roof with Famitsu.
(NSB and GG are friends. They both do the same things and help each other.)
