Sexual harassment on Capcom's FG reality show

So mainstream media just found out the ugly side of "fighting game community."

Penny Arcade reported a new FGC scandal.

If it's too long and you don't want to read. Here's summary.

1. Aris, the Tekken player, said sexual harassment is a norm in FGC, and "not being welcome" is the beauty of FGC, on Capcom's reality show stream. (He was there as the Tekken Team's coach.)
2. A female contestant who was offended by Aris forfeited a match from the mistreatment.

What is happening right now is the "FGC" is deploying shoguns, ninjas, and foot soldiers to cover up/prove point/derail/damage control the incident (the usual procedures).

Luckily, mainstream media don't read Beast Note, because they will get some salts to the wounds and some nails to the coffins.

It'd be more fun if they follow up with a scoop about FGC's forbidden topics.

Anyway, Aris did a good job explaining things on screen as an Evo commentator last year as we mentioned. This's a big loss in respect for him. His apology statement was great, but only for the first half. He should've just acknowledged the mistakes without defending "FGC" which will eventually go down to just some people with the same attitudes as his.

Real FGC doesn't need hostility, not even a mild one. Japan proved it. They successfully convinced Nico Nico (22 million subscribers) and established a real FG league this year. They clearly have the people with the right attitudes and the star players whom the fans want to see even they have to pay. They also beat the system (the strict laws) that prevented them from doing big things. And you know what? The commentators have to avoid saying the word "died" on the stream. Nothing is lost here.

American "FGC" does have bigger tournaments and better equipments, but in term of progress, they now fall behind the Japanese. They have yet to get rid of the dark image, let alone be more accessible. (Though it's not like they actually care.)

Don't let anyone tell you that the "FGC" is all about enthusiasms and energies to make violence, racism, or sexism acceptable in any degree. People enjoy WWE and pay to see even the villains because we know the dramas are fake and it's entertaining. But in "FGC" the real dramas are real and it's disgusting.

Let's hear the whole story (SBO related)

I want to comment on fubarduck's story on Wakeup Shoryuken E073.

"SBO should be like Evo"
That's not going to happen, as everyone should already know. SBO itself is organized by Arcadia acarde gaming magazine. It's I-help-you-you-help-me relationship like many companies out there. Arcadia's main objective is to stimulate arcade scene, so they can sell the magazine. However, the tournament is also a good thing since it's actually the only true national level unofficial tournament. (because they have local area qualifiers) This's where players around the country can test their skills and get some prize. It's as-good-as-it-gets standard. The point is you can't treat it like community's event.

"SBO had 40,000 viewers on the stream"
Nico Nico doesn't display number of viewers. The number he referred to is attendee. (more like total unique session) It will only increase and never go down. I'd be surprised if the actual net ticket buyers exceed 10,000. The most realistic guess is 7,000 maximum.

"They made a lot of money from the stream"
Like I said, I don't think they made a lot of money. The costs of equipments, the big space in Makuhari Messe, the Nico stream, the staff. And since it's not organized by the community, they probably pay a lot for the staff, as opposed to asking for volunteers. These costs is also another reason why they shouldn't want a longer tournament (AKA double elimination) because some fees are charged hourly.

"SBO was so obsessed with getting Daigo to play in the tournament (and that caused the incident)"
Half truth. Do you know how Mago and Tokido got their spot in SBO? Because Mago won SSF4AE x Tougeki: Natsu no Jin, and then he chose Tokido as his partner. Mago played 4 matches. Tokido won zero round. (Shiro-Shungoku Neurosis probably played at least 18 matches for the spot including the retries.) On top of that, they both were invited by Capcom. They didn't come from participating any selected tournament or the qualifier like the rest of the players in Natsu no Jin. By directing all attention to Umehara alone is not fair.


That's all. I'm not saying SBO's miscalculation/management was acceptable. I just feel that unnecessary things were said just because someone read too much strangers' posts on a message board (and probably the same persons with different IPs who try to act like the majority). Some people attack SBO just because they want a free stream. Some are mad because they didn't see their favorite player enough after paying 1,500 yen. Some do it just for fun. If you continue to listen without thinking, eventually you'll become a tool for them.

On another topic/subject, I saw certain pretentious haters riding SBO scandal wave. It's pretty funny because what they condemn is actually what they did.

Who blatantly mistreated a certain Japanese player on several occasions both in and outside a tournament?
Who prevented a certain Japanese player from playing on the stream after he paid 200,000 yen to be there?


You won't find the answers elsewhere. Because this's how Fighting Game Community (笑) works.

Evolution 2010 Summary

We never had one, and Evolution 2011 is just one month away. I rewatched the whole things and made this, Beast Note's Evolution 2010 Summary!

Participants from Japan: Daigo Umehara, Tokido, Eita, Soushihan KSK (GODSGARDEN cofounder)

- Tokido, Eita, KSK shared a hotel room. Umehara stayed at another hotel.
- Umehara had an autograph session in Mad Catz booth. A girl had him sign her breast.
- GamerBee can speak some English, but he wasn't confident at the time, so he spoke through a translator. (He can speak Japanese, too)
- No one actually knew GameBee until he beat Justin Wong. He was referred as The Strong Adon Player, and the commentators didn't know what country is he from.
- Level UP used only Stickam on the first day but it's not stable, so they added Ustream in the second day. Judging by viewers, people preferred Ustream.
- Tokido submitted "Iceman" as his alias. (Before this, He tried to call himself "Ice Age" from his cold-blooded play style.)
- From Capcom Unity's Twitter, it looks like someone stole Umehara's fightstick.
- 18,000+ viewers peak on Stickam and 30,000+ viewers peak on Ustream.
- The number of SSF4 participants is said to be around 1,700.

First Day (July 9)
- Umehara got a seed from Evolution Asia-Pacific  in Australia.

- Umehara was in a bad condition. It seemed like he caught a cold and was seen using an eye drop. MarkMan gave him a sweater.

- [SSF4] Tokido made such a serious face then someone in the chat said "Murder Face." The Japanese stream monsters adopted it. This's how he got the new alias.

The Salty Suite
The Salty Suite was a money match event in the nights during the Evo. The night before the last day, Umehara defeated Arturo "Sabin" Sanchez (5-4) for $500, Marn (5-2) for $100?, Kai, Hsien Chang, JPizzle, and a guy or two. Tokido and Eita was there, and commentated a couple of Umehara's matches. KSK was there, too. GamerBee won the mini tournament of 8 players or so. (Marn, Tokido joined, Umehara didn't)

Last Day (July 11)
- Evolution Japan announced before SSF4 final. KSK revealed that he went there because of this. (The event was later postponed from late 2010 to May 6-7, 2011, then it was cancelled.)

- Ono (SF4 producer) requested that everyone in the hall do a Shoryuken so he can take a picture for his tweet.
- [SSF4] There was a rap video before the finals.
- [SSF4] G4TV did a coverage in the top 8 and they had Adam Sessler on the mic. It seemed like Sessler had no knowledge about fighting games at all, he couldn't even call the scores right. And in the second game of the grand final, he said out loud after Ricky O. won the first round "It's all tied up!" even Umehara had the lead. (He counted total rounds instead of game.) The line "It's all tied up!" later became a meme.
- The stream crashed during the grand final, it went back when the matches are over. I'm not sure if it was because the hotel's Internet line or the hardwares.
- Mad Catz produced 24 exclusive golden fightsticks as an award for the event, mainly for top 8 of SSF4 and the persons who made contributions to the community. Each of them has a serial number. Umehara received No.1 as SSF4 champion. MarkMan had No.23 but later gave away for the raffle prize at Fight for Relief charity event.

Spooky and Season's Beatings V incident

From the previous post, Spooky seemd to forget that his team actually ran the worst stream of 2010, and tried to downplay Level Up, that's why we need this post.

The incident took place in Season's Beatings V: Redemption (Ohio) on October 16, 2010. Umehara played in the worst environment as it had no stage and he was surrounded by the attendants who apparently cheered on his opponents. They didn't just stand near, they almost leaned him. Once he lost, Arturo Sanchez (or Sabin, a Dhalsim player) who, at the time, was a part of Team Spooky, ran (violently) from the commentator desk to congratulate the opponent and kicked Umehara's chair. (You could see this on the stream.) Umehara, who was invited to the tournament, was pushed out of the sight by the crowd, like he wasn't needed anymore.

Not only that, Sabin, who was a commentator, made an unclaimed remark on the microphone that Umehara didn't want to play on the stream because he's picky about the screen mornitor and was afraid to lose on the stream. (He later added that Umehara tried to have some privilege on a forum. At the time, Sabin had his own propaganda against Umehara.) Spooky, as the head of the team, didn't do anything about this, and even agreed with him. No apology so far.

Later, the guy who organized the event (Ghaleon) said no such thing. The quote is below.

My close friend is Daigo's personal translator this weekend, and Daigo didn't mention anything about the stream station being wack or the EC/WC being disrespectful or refusing to play there or whatever. All he actually cared about was hearing the TV which was hard for him even in the pools area and on the stream. So -- we have headphones for him that Madcatz gave us as prizes because Markman is gdlk (as is Hori!) So I guess he isn't butthurt about whatever you think you saw on the stream, don't worry about it. And yeah, he did look tired and was I think asleep for parts of the 5-on-5. You know what he did after I asked him if it was fun or boring, assuming he wasn't that into it and would want to go back to the hotel right away? Gave me a big, genuine smile and said "fun!" and asked us to bring him more money matches, which we did.

One question that Spooky should ask himself before going over Level Up is why is his (s)team always infected by this kind of people?

P.S. This incident is why Umehara started using a noise-canceling headphones.
