Umehara confirmed for national qualifiers

The schedules of Taito's UFS4 national tournament qualifiers are revealed today. Daigo Umehara is confirmed to participate in the Tokyo qualifiers that will be held on August 23. He will compete in both singles and 3 on 3 tournament.

For singles, there're 8 groups of 16 players. Umehara is in group F, same as Akimo (Hon/Ele) and Tsuna (Jur).

Complaints
TOPANGA didn't reveal the stream links until the moment the tournament started. A lot of people were at the TOPANGA TV channel and knew it from some guys who were kind enough to wait and redirect people.

We don't know why make a good tournament just to fail at PR. They should announce days before and also keep tweeting about it during the tournament. This's why we miss Niconico. They have better management and will put the stream on the first page.

A lot of people also didn't know about the online donation via subscription. They should mention about it on the official Twitter or at the stream page. In fact, we think they should make the chat sub only. There's nothing wrong with it, since the money will go to charity and also make chat peaceful. (A cute chat icon for the sub would be nice too)

Umehara confirmed for 4th TOPANGA Charity Cup

Ten players, two teams are now confirmed to compete in The 4th TOPANGA Charity Cup on July 5.

Revealed last week was a team that consists of Nyanshi, Mago, Nemo, Misse, and Umehara.

TOPANGA League B season 2 announced (update and correction)

TOPANGA founder and representative Nyanshi or Mr. Toyota announced tonight on TOPANGA TV (special episode) that the season 2 of TOPANGA League B will begin on September 27. The online league will have 16 players, only 13 players (coincidently 13 characters) were announced at this time.

The last three players will come from online qualifiers that will be held on September 23 and will be streamed by Niconico (most likely free).

TOPANGA founder, Fusuke Toyota aka. Nyanshi, announced tonight on TOPANGA TV that The 3rd TOPANGA Charity Cup has raised 429,363 yen for charity.

January Gunslinger Stratos events summary

The 2nd Stratos Party on January 12
- Daigo Umehara, Fuudo, Mago, Nyanshi appeared in Gunslinger Stratos' 2nd Stratos Party. (Read about 1st Stratos Party here) The event is an offline event where players can come to find team members in order to compete in the official tournament on the next day. The location is the same as the tournament venue. There're free-play cabinets, UFO catchers, and merchandise for purchase.

Official national tournament in Tokyo on January 13
- There're 2 official national tournaments. One in Tokyo, and another in Osaka (this Summer). Both will have 10 million yen total prize money.

Umehara wins local Gunslinger Stratos tournament again

Reported by the game producer himself, Daigo Umehara and his team won a local Gunslinger Stratos tournament at Adores Sunshine game center in Ikebukuro today.

The place was packed and there're 22 teams trying to get into the tournament although they accepted only 8. They had to choose by lottery.

The team today "TOPANGA" consists of Umehara, Fuudo, Nyanshi, and an unidentified player.

Umehara didn't show any interest in any genre other than fighting games before. But he invested a lot of time in Gunslinger Stratos after becoming the official supporter and was recently said by some to be the strongest Jonathan player in the game. He also won a local GS tournament in Akihabara last month.

Team Umehara wins local Gunslinger Stratos tournament

Both Fuudo and Mago announced tonight that their team "Team Umehara" has won a local Gunslinger Stratos tournament at Taito Station Akihabara branch on Saturday. There were 16 teams on that day.

The members of Team Umehara were Daigo Umehara, Fuudo, Mago, Nyanshi.

Fuudo started introducing Gunslinger Stratos on Kachitagari TV (TOPANGA TV spin-off) in September, but it seems to be a hard work. The game is not spectator-friendly and it favors a static team over a group of 4 strangers. Fuudo also revealed on the show their strategy is letting Umehara stay in the frontline while other teammates snipe enemies from behind.

Mago, Fuudo on Gunslinger Stratos trip to Osaka

Mago, Fuudo, Nyanshi reportedly went to Osaka since Friday (July 27) for an unknown reason. All we heard is they went to play Gunslinger Stratos at Round 1 Umeda branch. And they are coming back.

We suspect that this is a not-so-stealth promotion of the game arranged by Square Enix or the game center itself. Round 1 Umeda is known to be the only place in Japan that has 16 cabinets of Gunslinger Stratos. Could it be because the game center ordered so many then SE gave them a free promotion?

Note that Osaka is 500 kilometer away from Tokyo. Traveling there is not cheap, especially to play a game at a game center. Another assumption is they went there to collect some stock footages of players in that region for TOPANGA League.

Umehara main game now is Gunslinger Stratos?

According to the reports, it is revealed that Daigo Umehara is spending many hours everyday playing Gunslinger Stratos since it was released to the arcades on July 12.

As you know, Umehara was always at Taito Station Shinjuku Minami-guchi branch playing SSF4AE2012. But now he moved to somewhere else that has 8 cabinets of Gunslinger Stratos. The Shinjuku Minami-guchi branch has only 4 cabinets.

Umehara was seen playing at Taito Station Big Box Takadanobaba (6th floor inside this building) and 2 other places in Ikebukuro.

Fuudo, Mago, Tokido, Nyanshi were also seen playing with Umehara.

Umehara has been appointed as the "official supporter" of Gunslinger Stratos by Square Enix in January. Later in April, Team Umehara (Umehara, Mago, Tokido, Fuudo) was formed for location test. We also expect to see the team compete in next year's official tournaments that have 10 million yen payout.

All the cabinets in the country are linked, so people have a chance to play with famous players using auto-matching even they are in different game centers. It is still unclear whether Umehara is hired to play intensively or not, but the strategy surely draws a lot of people to the game centers.

Umehara used to say in a magazine interview that he considered playing Gunslinger Stratos as a main game (beside the Famitsu interview where he said 2012 is about SF4 and GS). We thought it was just a humor at that time.

2nd TOPANGA Charity Cup raises 800,000 yen

Nyanshi, TOPANGA founder, announced tonight that The 2nd TOPANGA Charity Cup raised and donated 797,725 yen to the Japan's Red Cross.

For reference, they raised 760,000 yen from the first Charity Cup last year.

2nd TOPANGA League B players announced

Nyanshi, TOPANGA founder, announced tonight on TOPANGA TV all of 14 players who will compete in TOPANGA League's B League and some other details.

- There're many well-known players/persons in Japan's FGC in this charity event. Some people you saw on the stream in the background are well-known in the community but they don't go to a tournament, especially female players.
- Many people came to this event even they live far away. (IIRC YHC-Mochi lives in the south-west coast of Japan 800 kilometers away)
- From the facts above, this is easily the biggest Street Fighter tournament in Japan because you don't normally see those people in the same venue like this.
- 95.8% of viewers rated the show on the main stream "Extremely good."
- The show ended with more than 166,000 attendees and more than 186,000 comments.

SSF4AE Nationals Zenyasai 2012 summary

This tournament was organized by Kagecchi, a staff from the team behind the national tournament, Tougeki, Ayano Cup. Zenyasai means "the eve (of)" so it's like a big rehearsal for the players who will play on the next day in the national tournament (March 3). You will find players from around (and outside) Japan here just like Ayano Cup (pre-Tougeki).

Daigo Umehara and friends, the Shinjuku gang, Ryan Hart, Poongko and fellow Korean players were in this tournament. There were 32 teams.

Behind TOPANGA League by 4gamer.net

4gamer.net posted an article about TOPANGA League today. They interviewed Mago, Tokido, Nyanshi, and "Management No.3." Nyanshi is TOPANGA representative director. And No.3 is the man who supervises most of the game shows on Nico Nico. This's also the first and proper interview about TOPANGA itself.

Here's Beast Note summary.

Impression of the first half
- Uryo was the biggest trouble for Mago.
- Tokido doesn't like online matches. It's hard to adapt with the lag.
- Both Mago and Tokido think that they'll do better in the knockout stage which is offline play.
- sako and Umehara were hardest matches for Tokido.
- Bon-chan vs. Kazunoko was Tokido's highlight.
- Momochi vs. Umehara and sako vs. Haitani were Mago's highlight.
- Mago pointed out that top 3 are players from Kansai (western half of Japan) and 4 to 7 are players from Kantou (eastern of Japan). It's bitter for him.

About TOPANGA
- Nyanshi was Umehara's acquaintance. He and Bon-chan started SF4 because of Umehara's invitation. Bon-chan was already good at gaming, but Nyanshi seldom played games.
- Nyanshi realized when he participated GODSGARDEN #1 (August 2009) together with Umehara that fighting games is a form of entertainment from the hype in that place.
- The goal of TOPANGA is to raise social status of games and gamers. Nyanshi wants people to enjoy fighting games in the same way as soccer or baseball.
- Nyanshi went to Taiwan with Umehara and saw Umehara's popularity with his own eyes, he was convinced that this can be a real job.
- Umehara is not directly related to TOPANGA.
- In January 2011, Nyanshi heard that Mago and Tokido didn't do Kao TV anymore so he invited them to join TOPANGA. (They were Kao TV's regular members.)
- Tokido decided to move on with TOPANGA because GG staff have a real job and he has more time to spend. (Beast Note - That time, KSK was finding a new house and job. They had no place to stream as Gamer's Vision is gone. No Kao TV for 3-4 months.)

First pay-per-view [fighting game] show [TOPANGA League]
- Talking about PPV, Nyanshi thinks that it's now or never. SF4 is still a hit since 2008 and many players have switched from other games. For example, Fuudo from Virtua Fighter, Nemo and Kazunoko from Guilty Gear. The level of gameplay is also high enough to become an entertainment.
- No.3 said Nyanshi first mentioned about the league possibility in the middle of Haitani vs. sako Concept Match. Nyanshi formally made business proposal 1 week after that.
- No.3 said the number of viewers in that concept match was quite good.
- The PPV idea and 3,000 yen plus-minus was from Nyanshi.
- No.3 was worried at first, he thought about 1,000 yen. Then he thinks it's reasonable. Because when divided by 12, it's only 300 yen an episode. And they must avoid a loss.
- Mago pointed out that there're players from Nagoya and Kansai area. Traveling and hotel expenses are necessary.
- At first, No.3 thought that if they could get 1,000 ticket buyers it would be nice. Apparently it exceeds his expectation. He didn't reveal the number, but it's enough to expect a second season.
- Though it's a joint project, TOPANGA will get larger share (earnings) than Dwango (Nico's mother company).
- They asked Capcom for permission. But Ono (SF4 producer) made final decision saying he wants to support player-organized event to keep fighting game business going.
- Nyanshi talked about possibility of having B league (lower division). It's open for everyone, players get promoted to A league.
